Our Mission:
Incorporated in 1998, The New York City Police Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the New York City Police Department, the world’s largest and most famous police force. The Museum strives to be an accessible resource for all the communities of the city of New York. Through its exhibitions, collections and educational programming, the Museum illustrates how the policies and culture of the NYPD have evolved over time to meet the changing needs of the City. The Museum serves as an educational institution, living memorial, and bridge of understanding between the various communities of New York, the international community and the New York City Police Department.

The Police Museum gives visitors an insider’s
look at the history and traditions of the largest police force in the country
and its role in the history of New York City. With artifacts that date
all the way back to the Dutch settlers, visitors can discover the impact of
the NYPD over the last three centuries. They will find out the reason police
precincts around the nation are marked with green lights outside their doors,
why officers are called “cops,” why their bosses are called “brass”
and which came first, the Model T or the Highway Unit? Visitors will
hear the moving stories of officers responding to the tragic attacks of September
11, 2001 and learn how the NYPD now works beyond the borders of New York City
to ensure the safety of every citizen. They will also view the shields
of every officer killed in the line of duty since 1845, and can contemplate
the bravery and dedication it takes to be one of New York's Finest.

Programs
In addition to mounting engaging exhibitions telling the history of the New
York City Police Department, The New York City Police Museum also provides
educational and family programming year round. All of our programs are open
to the public.
Some of our annual programs include:
Back-to-School Safety Day
Join McGruff the Crime Dog at the Police Museum for an afternoon of back-to-school
safety. Adults and children learn a range of safety skills from school bus,
subway and pedestrian safety, Stranger Danger, to internet safety and awareness.
Program is free with paid admission. RSVP recommended.
Bike Safety Day
In partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation and Safe
Kids, children and their families can get ready for a fun and safe summer
by learning about bicycle safety. Each child will receive a free helmet when
accompanied by a parent or guardian, while supplies last. Technicians will
be on hand to check that children’s bicycles and helmets fit properly.
Children learn the rules of the road with sign recognition and proper signaling.
They can then test their skills and knowledge on an obstacle course monitored
by bike safety instructors. Children and adults are encouraged to bring their
bicycles. Bike Safety Day is free for all but advance registration is highly
recommended.
Blood Drive
In honor of National Police Week, The New York City Police Museum hosts an
annual blood drive. (Usually falls on second week in May.)
Car Seat Safety Day
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as many as
85% of all car seats are improperly installed. Bring your car to The New York
City Police Museum and have your child’s seat checked out by a Certified
Inspector from the New York City Department of Transportation. The service
is free but advance registration is highly recommended.
Car Show
The Museum largest annual event returns each June. Visitors will have the
unique opportunity to view a piece of New York City’s history when the
Police Museum displays classic patrol vehicles used by New York’s Finest
at its Annual Car Show. Also on display will be original and replica cars
from famous crime-fighting television series. The show takes place right outside
the historic Museum. Car owners will be on hand to show off their prize possessions
and answer questions. This is a free event.
Family Fair Day
The New York City Police Museum invites you and your family to salute New
York’s Finest! Enjoy a fun-filled day with free activities and snacks
while learning about the different departments and units of the NYPD, such
as the Mounted Unit and the Emergency Services Unit (ESU). This is a free
event.
Halloween Party
Children and their families enjoy a howling good time at The New York City
Police Museum’s annual Halloween Party. Take part in various fun, spooky
Halloween activities while learning how to stay safe while trick-or-treating.
Activities also include a haunted house and costume contest. Program is free
with paid admission. RSVP recommended.
Heritage Hall Series
The New York City Police Museum highlights several different NYPD Fraternal
Organizations throughout the year. For more information and scheduling, contact
the Museum at (212) 480-3100 x102.

of holiday cheer, festive goodies, and arts activities. While at the Museum,
participate in the Toys for Tots campaign and enroll your child in Operation
SAFE CHILD. Free admission with any toy donation.
Junior Detective Day
Participants can sharpen their observation and memory skills as they find
evidence and solve a crime. This program emphasizes the type of work the NYPD
detectives engage in daily, and provides you and your child the opportunity
to use some of the same critical thinking skills used by real NYPD detectives.
Be prepared to transform from a bystander to a super sleuth! Program is free
with admission.
Safe Teen Driving
Whether you are a parent whose teen is about to sit behind the wheel or a
teen looking forward to your first driving lesson, this class is intended
to be helpful for everyone involved. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend
with their teen(s). Program is free with paid admission. RSVP recommended.
