African-American
Heritage Day
In conjunction with African American History Month, children will be able
to view exhibits honoring the ground-breaking African American officers and
explore the participation of African Americans in the NYPD, starting with
Sam Battle, the first African American hired by the NYPD in 1911 to the ever
expanding and important role of African Americans in the NYPD TODAY. Children
will be given a challenge to locate information and identify quotes of one
of the historic African Americans on the NYPD.

Crime Scene Investigations
This program emphasized the type of work engaged in by NYPD detectives everyday,
and provides children with the opportunity to use some of the same critical
thinking skills used by real NYPD detectives. Lessons include hands-on demonstrations
of various forensic techniques, such as fingerprinting.

Irish Heritage Day
Irish Heritage Day honors the Irish of New York City and the pivotal roles
they have played in shaping the history of the NYPD. Irish Heritage Day includes
activities for kids and adults, such as championship Irish step dancing and
step dance lessons for kids, live Irish music and a performance by the NYPD
Emerald Society Pipes & Drums, guest speakers on the History of the Irish
in the NYPD, and craft projects for children that salute the first 700 Irish
American NYPD officers.

Women in the NYPD
Active and retired female officers from the last four decades will share their
experiences and how they paved the road for women to rise in the ranks of
the NYPD. This informal and candid discussion will examine the roles women
have played as emerging and influential members of the law enforcement community.
The Museum will host girls groups from around the city who will be exposed
to a discussion about law enforcement as a career opportunity.

Bicycle Safety Program
The Police Museum will host a Bike Safety Day in partnership with NYC Department
of Transportation and the New York Chapter of the National Safe Kids Campaign.
The days activities will include games and presentations on the rules of the
road such as sign recognition and proper signaling. Certified technicians
will be on hand to check the safety of children’s bicycles, and to ensure
their bikes and helmets fit properly. Children will then have the opportunity
to test their new street skills on an outside obstacle course, monitored by
bike safety instructors.

Cultural Heritage Street Fair
The Police Museum will host its 2nd Annual Societies of the NYPD Day where
visitors can meet members of the various NYPD cultural and ethnic societies
and view exhibits that highlight the fraternal, social and ethnic groups of
the NYPD. The societies display how their members reflect the diversity of
the Department. These groups, such as the Emerald Society, the Asian Jade
Society, the Policewomen’s Endowment Association and the Gay Officer’s
Action League, were founded by members struggling for equality within the
NYPD and their community. The groups will also present ethnic and cultural
performances from the Asian Jade Society’s Dragon Dancers, the Emerald
Society’s Pipe and Drum Band, and more.

Annual Vintage Police Car Show
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to view a piece of the City’s
history when the Police Museum displays classic patrol vehicles used by New
York’s Finest at its 7th Annual Car Show. Also on display will be original
and replica cars from famous crime-fighting television series. The vehicles
will be displayed outside the historic New York City Police Museum located
at 100 Old Slip. Car owners will be on hand to show off their prize possessions
and answer questions.

Travel Safety Weekend
Many New York area families will travel this summer in their car. In conjunction
with the Museum’s Annual Vintage Police Car Show, visitors can stop
at the Auto Safety Station and receive information that will make their travels
safer, such as proper cell phone usage, seatbelt safety, children’s
booster seats and other safety tips.
